Shown below are some of the modalities/therapies/personal development approaches which Tony has studied and uses where appropriate. He believes that if you know 100's of alternative approaches then you can choose whatever is most appropriate and effective for the person (or people) you're working with. This gives you the ability to be as effective and as respectful of your clients/students no matter what their religious or other beliefs are - and allows you to design a program which they feel comfortable with and which will achieve the greatest results possible. And although he may not use any of these therapies while doing group training, his understanding of how we can change enables him to design programs in a way that will create noticable results. Cognitive, Behavioural, Psychoanalytic, and Humanistic
Psychologies; NLP, Time Line Therapy, Ericsonian Hypnosis,
Clinical Hypnotherapy, Guided Visualisations, Gestalt &
Cathartic therapies; Rational Emotive Therapy, Inner Child
work, Bioenergetics and other body work, Connected
Breathing/Rebirthing, Various forms of Regression including
ISIS, Hypnotic, Genealogical, Past Life etc., Reiki, Various
forms of Yoga, Rogerian Counselling, Luscher colour testing,
Core Transformation, Primal Therapy, Spiritual Healing,
Transactional Analysis, Eye Gazing and other vision/love
processes, Jungian approaches (including MBTI), dozens of
Meditative therapies, (a small amount of Kinesiology, Eye
Movement Desensitisation, Aromatherapy, Astrology, Bach
Flower Remedies, and Psychodrama); and numerous
methodologies and processes Tony has developed himself. Tony is a very spiritual person. His whole life is
dedicated to loving as Jesus loved (an unconditional love
for all humanity, which was also demonstrated by people such
as Mahatma Gandhi). However he uses spirituality to aid
clients and participants to grow, rather than to push any
particular viewpoint. Indeed his extensive study has been
with the purpose of finding a synthesis of all religions,
spiritual and humanistic approaches, as well as atheism,
agnosticicm and scientific approaches. (And he feels he has
succeeded in finding this synthesis, which forms the basis
of his book, Spiritual Realisations.) He has a strong
working knowledge of the principles of Christianity,
Hinduism, Mystical Islam, Taoism, Buddhism, and most
elements of "the new age"- and their uses in therapy if and
when appropriate, and if desired by the client. This
extensive understanding allows Tony to incorporate the
client's beliefs to aid the work being done, to aid their
growth and enhance their wisdom. |

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE STANDARD "PSYCHOLOGICAL" FRAMEWORK AND THE "PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT" FRAMEWORK
Psychology as taught at University is normally a mixture of "rats
and stats" and is based around a framework of analysing other
people's problems - which often leads to the client feeling like they
are being judged and intellectually dissected by the psychologist. As
amazing as it may seem, it is possible to earn a Bachelors, Masters
and Doctorate in Psychology without learning any skills in Therapy or
Counselling.
The Personal Development framework is based on the counsellor
developing himself (or herself) first, and only when (s)he has
developed a reasonable degree of wisdom, and has been successful in
living and applying this knowledge, can he be considered ready to
help others in a professional capacity. For by having first worked on
himself, he is able to empathise with, and have a deep understanding
of what the client is going through - and thereby able to help the
client through it.
As one client commented "I learnt more practical psychology (how to
make my life work) in one weekend with Tony than in my entire
Psychology degree".
1/ The counsellor has the ability to provide a totally accepting space which allows the clients to be themselves and to share themselves fully. (Stephen Covey uses the term "psychological air". Carl Rogers uses the term "Unconditional Acceptance".)
(Look at how open the counsellor is when you confront them -
with criticisms or with views that oppose their own)
2/ The counsellor is able to (subtly) direct clients in a
way which supports them understanding themselves, and changing their
outlook, attitudes, habits, beliefs and behaviours.
(This is dependent on the depth of the counsellor's understanding
of the dynamics of personal development, the ability to understand
the underlying causes of people's behaviour, and to simplify these
into common sense distinctions that the client is supported in
finding themselves.)
This can be observed by asking the counsellor questions about
personal development and listening to the depth and clarity of their
replies.
3/ The counsellor has walked the path (or one similar)
him/herself.
(The counsellor needs to have spent a lot of time, energy, and
focus developing themselves - so they have empathy for what the
client is going through - and the experience to walk the path with
the client.
This can be observed by the counsellor's level of openness (love,
happiness, lack of defensiveness, openness to new ideas, congruence,
ability to share themselves fully) and his level of power (ability to
create the results he wants in life).)
